BPCC instructor receives national awards

BPCC Liberal Arts Instructor Katie Bickham has been recently awarded two prestigious awards for her literary work – The Belle Mar, a collection of poems – and soon will be published nationally.

Bickham was named “Best in Show” at the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s (SRAC) CRITICAL MASS Contest, where she received a $2,000 cash prize and an advertisement in a national literary publication.  Her work was chosen by book critic David L. Ulin, former book editor of the Los Angeles Times. His written review of her work will be published in local/national literary art publications/websites.

Bickham is honored to chosen by a renowned literary critic.

“The premise of the contest was that SRAC brought in professional critics from all over the US to select winners,” said Bickham.  “I’m really excited that SRAC is shining a light on writers in our Shreveport-Bossier community in addition to our many outstanding visual artists, and I’m proud to be a part of this movement.”

In addition to the SRAC award, Bickham also recently won the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Poetry Prize for The Belle Mar.  This prize comes with $2000 and publication.

Katie Bickham - BPCCEach year, Pleiades Press, in collaboration with Louisiana State University Press and Winthrop University, publishes a book of poetry, as determined through the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Poetry Prize. Judges are poets of national prominence; screeners are also well-published poets.

“The Belle Mar is a fictional plantation in South Louisiana, and each poem in the collection takes place in a different room of the house in a different year,” says Bickham of her poetry book. Last year, Bickham’s collection of poems in The Belle Mar was also published in Vol 36.1 of The Missouri Review, the nation’s number one literary journal.

Bickham has taught English at BPCC for more than two years as an adjunct instructor and became a full-time instructor in January. She holds a bachelor of arts in English, a master of arts in liberal arts from Louisiana State University in Shreveport and a MFA from Stonecoast at the University of Southern Maine.
