Benton clinches 7th-grade girls basketball district title

The Benton Lady Tigers clinched the Bossier Parish middle school seventh-grade district title with a 24-7 victory over Elm Grove Monday at Benton.

The Lady Tigers improved to 9-0 and have a two-game lead over second-place Greenacres with one to play.

The Lady Mustangs, whose only two losses have been to Benton, downed Haughton 33-9 at Greenacres. In the other seventh-grade game, Cope got past Rusheon 28-22.

Monday’s eighth-grade results produced a three-way tie for first in the district.

Cope downed Rusheon 31-27, Haughton defeated Greenacres 28-19 and Elm Grove defeated Benton 26-18.

Rusheon, Haughton and Elm Grove are all 6-3 with one game to play. Cope is one game back at 5-4.

In district finales Thursday, Cope hosts Benton, Rusheon hosts Greenacres and Haughton visits Elm Grove.

At Benton, Abbie Wynn scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Benton seventh-graders.

Emily Ward had eight points, five steals and seven rebounds. Morgan Bradford and Mackenzie Chaffin combined for eight points.

Madison Breazeale and Abby Colvin played tough defense, coach MaryJo Duddy said.

Elm Grove’s Traclyn Bell, Mia Trapp and Madeline Grunewald combined for six points.

Dionisha Wilson poured in 14 points for the victorious Lady Eagles eighth-grade team. Kaylan Coker helped the Elm Grove cause with four points.

Malorie Gill led Benton with six points Mackenzie Terhune and Mackenzie McEntee combined for eight points. Braylin Shaffer had 10 rebounds, and Brittney McClelland had nine.

At Greenacres, Brooklyn Sutton paced the Lady Mustangs seventh-grade team with 11 points.

Dantria Stewart scored six, while Kourtnee White and Traciona Russell combined for eight.

Caitlin Ward led Haughton with five points.

The Lady Bucs eighth-grade team got 12 points from Champagne Dennis in its victory. Maegan Staton, Leah Hopson and Savannah Salley combined for 12 points.

Greenacres’ Coumilla Rodriquez led all scorers with 15 points.

At Rusheon, Jaisha Banks scored 10 points and Courtney Clawson added nine to lead the Lady Cougars seventh-grade team to the win.

Tymya Poole and Mel Lewis tossed in six points each for Rusheon. Essence Walpool and Charandra Johnson combined for eight.

The one-two punch of Jasmyn Dawson (12 points) and Chloe Walker (11) led the victorious Lady Cougars eighth-grade team.
