The Cope Cougars stand alone atop the seventh- and eighth-grade middle school boys basketball districts.
Cope swept Rusheon Thursday evening, winning the eighth-grade game 44-26 and the seventh 39-36. Both games were for the outright district lead.
The Cougars seventh- and eighth-grade teams are both 4-0. Both Rusheon teams are 3-1.
In other eighth-grade games, Benton downed Elm Grove 31-25 and Haughton defeated Greenacres 38-31.
In other seventh-grade games, Elm Grove got past Benton 33-24 and Greenacres defeated Haughton 40-21.
At Rusheon, Quillin Dixon and Jaylyn Thomas scored 11 points each to lead the Cope eighth-graders.
Zylon Newson added nine and Trenton Ivy eight.
Cope coach Roger Vance said his team played “incredible defense.”
Keshawn Jones pumped in 10 points to lead Rusheon. Michael Edwards chipped in with seven.
TJ Robinson and Kamren Davis scored 10 points each to lead the Cougars seventh-grade squad. Ty McCoy added eight.
Jacoby Decker had a strong game for Rusheon with 16 points. Ja’Nron Rogers added eight.
At Elm Grove, the Benton eighth-graders improved to 3-1 and remained one game out of first.
Doyle Adams led the Tigers with 10 points, and TJ Anderson added eight.
Ethan Yarbrough topped the Tigers seventh-grade team with 10 points. Bubba Osby and Brad Fream scored seven each.
At Haughton, Lavonta Gipson and Nick Heckman poured in 11 points each to lead the victorious Bucs eighth-graders.
Colby McGee and David Maxey scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Mustangs.
The Greenacres seventh-grade squad raised its record to 3-1.
Fred Lemons came through with 21 points for the Mustangs, and Courtney Samuels chipped in with eight.
Decarrio York led Haughton with eight points and D’Terius Hicks had six.
