The Haughton Buccaneers and Parkway Panthers advanced to the semifinals of the Jack Clayton Invitational boys basketball tournament with victories Wednesday night at Haughton.
The Bucs won their first game of the season, defeating Calvary Baptist 62-53 in the nightcap. Parkway knocked off North DeSoto 70-52. In the tournament opener, Benton fell to Lakeside 68-49.
Haughton (1-5) faces Parkway (2-0) Thursday night at 8:30 in the semifinals.
Haughton’s Brandon Deane continued his good start to the season with a 22-point effort against Calvary. The Bucs were coming off two tough losses, by two points to North DeSoto and in overtime to Minden.
Freshman Demarcus Hall chipped in with 10 points. Starskey Willis and Martay Grant scored nine each.
Fred Davis topped Calvary (0-1) with 20 points. Rodney Hill Jr. added 10.
Parkway got 18 points from Terrace Marshall Jr. and Kamren Davis. Robert McKnight scored 13, including a pair of 3-pointers. Marshall scored nine points in the first quarter as the Panthers raced to a 24-14 lead.
Chase Mitchell and Jalen Gould scored 19 points each to lead Lakeside past Benton. Gould had all three of the Warriors’ 3-pointers. Damion Coleman added 14.
Lakeside (6-1) plays the winner of Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. game between Byrd and Minden in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at BPCC.
Benton trailed just 44-40 after three quarters, but the Tigers were outscored 25-8 in the fourth. Jerriyun Lawrence paced Benton with 12 points. Jalen Harding added eight.
Benton (1-3) plays the Byrd-Minden loser in the consolation semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday at BPCC.
