The Haughton Buccaneers won their fourth straight District 2-4A baseball championship with a 13-2 victory over the Benton Tigers Saturday afternoon at Benton.
Benton forced a one-game showdown for the title with a 5-2 victory Friday night at Haughton.
“You can’t take them from granted,” Haughton coach Glenn Maynor said of the district titles. “You can’t assume they are going to come every year. Next year we’re going to move up to 5A and it’s going to get tougher. Every one of them is special and to win another one is a great accomplishment for this team.”
Haughton finished the regular season 24-6 and 10-2 in district. Benton finished 19-10 and 9-3.
Maynor praised Benton head coach Brian France for the job he did in his first year.
“He’s a good friend of mine and does a heckuva job,” he said. “All year long I thought we had the better team, and I can’t say enough about the job Coach France did to get his team to this point. They ran out of pitching today, but he does an awesome job with his program.”
Maynor also said his assistant coaches Jason Brotheron, John Stafford and Justin Ginn deserve a lot of the credit for his team’s success.
Elsewhere, Airline stayed on top of District 1-5A with a sweep of Captain Shreve, winning 9-0 Friday and 3-2 Saturday.
