District season gets under way

cope2The Cope Cougars and Rusheon Rams started the Bossier Parish boys middle school basketball season with sweeps Monday.

Cope defeated Elm Grove 32-31 in the seventh-grade and 38-26 in the eighth-grade game.

Rusheon downed Haughton 43-25 in the seventh-grade game and 45-26 in the eighth-grade game.

The Greenacres Mustangs defeated Benton 50-24 in an eighth-grade game.

The Cope and Elm Grove seventh-grade teams played a thriller at Cope.

Elm Grove’s Knije Harrison sank a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to tie the game.

Cope’s Quillen Dixon was fouled just before the buzzer and hit the front end of a one-and-one to give the Cougars the victory.

Trenton Ivy led Cope with  15 points. Dixon and Jack Hunter Johnson had six apiece.

Harrison led all scorers with 24 points. Craylon McGhee had 10 rebounds.

KJ Bilbo scored 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cope eighth-graders. Tybo Wimberly added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks
Malcolm Banks led Elm Grove with 16 points.

At Rusheon, Keyshawn Jones scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Rams seventh-graders.

Tyler Andrews had five points and eight assists. Demarco Hill had six points and seven rounds. Catrell Washington scored six points.

Malcolm Hall led Haughton with six points. Jay Don Morrison and Nick Heckman scored five apiece.

Keldrick Carper poured in 18 points to lead the Rusheon eighth-grade team. Kevin Bonapart and Randy Combs combined for 12.

Charles Harper led Haughton with 10 points. Tobias Jones scored seven points with all of those coming in the fourth quarter.

At Greenacres, four players scored in double figures to lead the Mustangs past Benton.

Anthony Mulrenin led the way with 13 points. Chris Davenport, Josh Jones and Harvey Calhoun scored 10 apiece.

District play resumes Thursday. Benton hosts Rusheon, Elm Grove hosts Greenacres and Cope visits Haughton.
