Parkway's Thomas, Bossier's Oliver win wrestling state titles

Parkway’s Cody Thomas and Bossier’s Jalen Oliver won titles at the LHSAA Wrestling State Championships Saturday night in Kenner.

Thomas, the No. 3 seed, edged No. 1 Andre’ Dean of Benton by a 6-4 decision in an All-Bossier Parish final in the Division II 145-pound weight class.

Dean, the top seed, defeated Bryant Montero of St. Thomas More 6-3 in the semifinals. Thomas edged No. 2 seed Anthony Taylor of Huntington 3-2.

Oliver dominated the Division III 182-pound class, pinning all three of his opponents.

It took him only 1 minute, 29 seconds to pin No. 2 seed Colin Vaughn of North Vermilion in the title match.

The title match was his longest. Oliver’s three matches lasted a total of 4:16.

Two other Bossier wrestlers — Xavier Chism and Oscar Telles — finished runner-up in their respective weight classes.

Chism, the No. 2 seed, lost a tough 7-6 decision to No. 1 Austin Scalisi of North Vermilion in the 126-pound finals.

Second-seeded Telles lost to top-seeded Trevor Schermer of Brusly at 132 pounds.

Three Parkway athletes earned third-place finishes in Division II — Alex Simmaly (113), Zac Funderburk (126) and Andre’ Henson (182).

Funderburk and Henson both lost in the quarterfinals of the main draw. Funderburk won five straight matches and Henson won four  in the wrestleback bracket.

Haughton’s Dylan Holiday finished third in the Division II 106-pound class after reaching the semifinals.

Benton’s Jeff Lewis (132) and Jordan White (160) posted fifth-place finishes.

Haughton’s Mitchell Doran pinned Robert Chenevert of Benton in the 182-pound class fifth-place match.

Bossier’s Avery Jones (145) and Donnie Edwards (220) posted fifth-place finishes in Division III.

Bossier’s Roytrez Williams was sixth at 185.

Bossier finished tied for fourth in Division III with 143 points. Brusly won its 12th state title with 222.

Parkway finished sixth in Division II with 117 points. Holy Cross of New Orleans won its 27th state title with 280.
