NSU SOFTBALL TEAM READY FOR REGIONAL

BATON ROUGE — The third-seeded Northwestern State softball team opens the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional tournament hosted by LSU, against second-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette at 3 p.m. today at Tiger Park.

The Lady Demons (40-13) earned the program’s fourth trip to the tournament after defeating Sam Houston State in a 5-4 nail-biter in the Southland Conference tournament championship on Saturday. Despite falling 7-4 to Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, the Ragin’ Cajuns (43-13) finished the season ranked No. 17 in the Ratings Percentage Index.

NSU and Louisiana-Lafayette have faced eight common opponents this season, including Western Kentucky, Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech.

Against WKU, the Lady Demons prevailed with the 5-3 win.

NSU came out on top of Mississippi State 10-5, while the Ragin’ Cajuns defeated the Bulldogs 9-1.

Junior Tara McKenney leads NSU from the plate, hitting .369 with 69 hits, including a team-high seven triples, giving her a spot in the individual season record book for the Lady Demons, just three triples behind Annie Johnson’s 2002 record. McKenney also sits sixth in hits and fifth in runs scored.
