Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington is warning residents about a scam that has been circulating today.
The intended victim receives a phone call from someone purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service or the Department of Homeland Security. The person tells the individual that they owe taxes and to avoid going to jail they must make a payment to clear up the issue.
Sheriff Whittington and the Bossier Sheriff’s Office wants to remind you not to give out personal information by phone or text, especially bank account information. If you have received a phone call like this or responded to the individual by giving out your personal information, you are encouraged to call the IRS scam department at 1-800-366-4484 or the Bossier Sheriff’s Office at 318-965-2203.
Detectives with the Bossier Police-Sheriff Financial Crimes Task Force are working to investigate this and other scams that look to take advantage of our residents.
