The Legacy Elementary Drama Club is venturing down the yellow brick road and inviting you to come along with them.

The Bears have partnered with the Benton High School drama department to help bring the arts to Legacy in a big way. They will stage their first big production, “We’re Off to See the Wizard” on Saturday, March 18 in the Airline High School Auditorium.

Show times are 2 and 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at Legacy or $7 at the door.

The show is co-directed by Britney Bass and Kara Reeh. The cast of all third, fourth and fifth grade students have been working since the beginning of February to learn their lines, find their costumes and perfect their roles for the stage.

Bass said everyone who tried out for the show got a part in the show that would highlight their specific talents. When it came time for dress rehearsals, the characters came to life before their eyes.

Stacy Bell said her daughter, Addison, has taken the role of the cowardly lion and put her own spin on it.

“We worked with a seamstress in Benton and came up with the idea for a dress with fur on it,” Bell said. “She is really owning this part. We are thrilled for her and the cast.”

Bell said she’s most excited about seeing the whole production come to life together on an actual stage. She admits she’s only seen a little bit of the show from after school rehearsals.

“I’ve never seen my child act. I didn’t think she could,” Bell said. “I watched the first little bit of practice and walked out because she was doing so good. I knew I wanted to wait and see the whole thing on stage.”

Legacy’s Assistant Principal Kimmie Smith said she is proud of the work and dedication the students, teachers and parents have put into this show.

“We’re finding more talent in our students than we knew they had,” Smith said. “These students are the cream of the crop. These kids will really shine on stage. This has been a great experience for them.”
