Local bands to take part in Classic on the Cane marching contest

Bossier, Benton, Haughton, Airline and Parkway to participate

The Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band will host the Classic on the Cane Marching Contest Saturday, Oct. 31 in Turpin Stadium.

Thirty-one high school marching bands with approximately 1,800 members from Louisiana and Texas will compete in five classifications beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band will perform with The Boston Brass at 6:30 p.m. with the awards ceremony set for 6:45 p.m. Admission is $5.

“I’m pleased with the number and quality of bands who will be participating,” said Dr. Jeff Mathews, director of bands at Northwestern State. “All regions of the state will be represented plus east Texas. This is a great opportunity to promote the Spirit of Northwestern and bring some outstanding marching bands to Natchitoches.”NSU Official SEAL

High schools competing in Class 1B are Many, Pickering, Merryville, DeQuincy, Rosepine and Logansport. Class 1A competitors will be Northwood, Buckeye, Bossier, Franklin Parish, St. Michael the Archangel and Sterlington.

Iowa, Byrd and Pineville will be in Class II. Those participating in Class III are Tioga, Zachary, Erath, Benton, Canton (Texas), Acadiana, Mabank (Texas), Ruston and E.D. White. Class IV competitors will be West Ouachita, Haughton, Airline, Deer Park (Texas), Parkway, West Monroe and Lafayette.

The contest will be webcast at banddirector.com.

Adjudicators are Robert Beshears of Garland (Texas) High, Kieth Sanders of Atlanta (Texas) High, Celestino Sosa of Little Elm (Texas) High, Estelle Murr of Alvarado (Texas) High and Roman Montoya of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps.
