Middle school girls basketball: Benton aims for outright eighth-grade title; Lady Tigers, Lady Bucs share 7th-grade lead

The Benton Lady Tigers clinched a share of the Bossier Parish middle school girls basketball eighth-grade championship with a hard-fought 34-33 victory over the Rusheon Lady Rams on Tuesday at Benton.

Benton improved to 7-1 and has a two-game lead over Rusheon, Haughton and Cope with two games to play. The Lady Tigers can clinch the title with a victory over Elm Grove on Thursday.

In other eighth-grade games, Cope slipped past Haughton 29-25 and Elm Grove defeated Greenacres 30-21.

Benton and Haughton are still tied for the seventh-grade lead. Both are 7-1 after victories Tuesday.

Benton downed Rusheon 29-17 and Haughton defeated Cope 30-14. In the other seventh-grade game, Greenacres dropped Elm Grove 22-13.

At Benton, Te’Quaza Chambers continued her outstanding season, scoring 16 points to lead the Lady Tigers eighth-grade squad to the win.

Mar’Kayla Clark and Madi Simms combined for 10 points. Clark led the Lady Tigers with 11 rebounds. Chambers and Ashanti Gavin grabbed four each. Coaches praised Gavin and Claire Ambrose for their defensive play.

Jada Malcolm topped Rusheon with 14 points.

Jada Anderson scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Benton seventh-grade team to the win. Anna Robins had five rebounds. Coaches cited Juliet Ibanez for her defensive effort.

Deidre Williams led Rusheon with six points.

At Cope, Kari Smith paced the victorious Lady Cougars eighth-grade team with 14 points. Keiarra McCoy added six.

Takaiyah Sweeney topped Haughton with 16 points.

Taralyn Sweeney continued her outstanding season with 20 points in the Lady Bucs’ seventh-grade victory.

Katie Curtis and Ashley Lee scored six points each for Cope.

At Elm Grove, Kendall Williams paced the victorious Lady Eagles eighth-grade team with 10 points. Madison Collins also had a solid game, scoring nine. Madison McAlister added seven.

Anwaar Shihadeh paced Greenacres with 11 points. Bi’tianna Mosley and Brandi Kelly combined for seven.

Toria Brooks scored eight points and Ainsley Ross and Shaterrica Jones chipped in with six each to lead the Lady Mustangs seventh-grade team to the victory. Jones was perfect from the free-throw line.

Karleigh Landry and Alex Foster combined for eight points for Elm Grove.
