Josephine LaCaze Smith
HAUGHTON, LA – Services to celebrate the life of Josephine LaCaze Smith, 94, were held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home. Services were officiated by Bro. Scotty Gibson of First Baptist Church of Haughton. Interment followed in Hand Cemetery, Coushatta, LA at 3:00 p.m. A brief visitation began at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Josephine was born on October 28, 1921, and passed away peacefully at home on the evening of March 31, 2016.
She retired from Byrd Hospital in Leesville, LA after many years as a dietician and was a devout woman of faith who read her bible daily and instilled Godly values to her children and grandchildren. Josephine was a master quilter and gave them away to family and friends who would love them as much as she did. In addition to her quilting, Josephine was an exceptional cook and gardener. She was a master baker and worked side by side with her daughter, Peggy, at The Ginger Bread House in Haughton. She was an inspiration to her family, always showing perseverance and love.
Josephine is preceded in death by her former husband, John Henry Smith; brother, Merrill LaCaze; grandson, Alton Ray Anderson; and her parents, Hyman and Agnes LaCaze. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Peggy Anderson and husband Carlton, Melba Ruth Tingle and husband Selma, John L. Smith and wife Darlene, and Geneva Lynn McLendon; sister, Lucille Rachall; grandchildren, Carla Nesbit, Jessica Smith, Makenzie Moore, Chase Smith, Molly Smith, Steven Tingle, Laura Tingle, Blain McLendon, and Derck McLendon; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Chris Nesbit, Matthew Nesbit, Chase Smith, Steven Tingle, Clayton Moore and Alfonso Whitaker. Honorary pallbearers are Merrill LaCaze, Jr. and Marshall Nesbit.
