Prep basketball: Haughton boys, girls advance in Minden tournament

The Haughton boys and girls won first-round games in the Gibsland Bank & Trust Minden Holiday Classic tournament Wednesday.

The Bucs edged Calvary 42-39, avenging a loss to the Cavaliers in the Haughton Jack Clayton Invitational earlier this season. Haughton faces Loyola, a 60-45 winner over Jonesboro-Hodge, in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4:50 p.m. at Minden High.

In other first-round boys games involving parish teams, Parkway fell to Woodlawn 56-43 and Plain Dealing lost to Evangel Christian 47-45 and Airline dropped a 52-43 decision to Mansfield.

Parkway and Plain Dealing face off in a consolation bracket game Thursday at 4:50 at the Minden Rec Center. Airline plays Haynesville at 6:10 Friday at Webster Junior High.

The Lady Bucs topped Haynesville 50-32. Haughton plays the winner of today’s Calvary-Plain Dealing game in the quarterfinals Friday at 4:50 at the Minden Rec Center.

In first-round games Thursday involving parish teams, Plain Dealing faces Calvary at 3:30 at Minden High and Parkway takes on El Dorado, Ark., at 8:50 at the Minden Rec Center.

Damien Sears scored 15 points to lead Haughton against Calvary. Brandon Deane added 12. The Bucs rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit with a 15-3 third-quarter run.

Inez Green led the Lady Bucs against Haynesville. with 21 points, her second straight game with that total. Champagne Dennis added nine and Mayghan Myers eight.

Kamren Davis paced Parkway against Woodlawn with 17 points. Chrishawn Harris added 10.

Parkway trailed 12-4 after the first quarter. The Panthers got within five going into the fourth but the Knights pulled away.
