Plain Dealing junior Keldrick Carper has been selected to the first team on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State team.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Carper, considered one of the state’s top college prospects in the Class of 2017, caught 66 passes for 947 yards and 13 touchdowns in 11 games. He also rushed for 716 yards on 112 carries and scored seven touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Shyheim Carter of Class 1A state champion Kentwood was named the offensive MVP. The Under Armour All-American finished his senior season with 2,443 passing yards and 1,648 rushing yards with over 30 total touchdowns. Defensively he had 57 tackles, five interceptions and broke up 13 passes.
Junior linebacker Chris Allen of Division IV state champion Southern Lab was named the defensive MVP. He finished the year with 108.5 tackles and 14 sacks.
South Cameron’s Mark Delaney was named Coach of the Year. He led the Tarpons to an 8-4 finish in the second round of the 1A playoffs. South Cameron, which has the smallest enrollment among football playing schools, had gone 4-36 in the previous four years combined and hadn’t had a winning season since 2007. Their first round playoff win over Ringgold was the school’s first since 2002.
