The Parkway Lady Panthers put up a good fight, but they couldn’t keep the Byrd Lady Jackets from clinching the District 1-5A softball title Friday evening at Parkway’s Dana Bailey Memorial Field.
The Lady Jackets scored two runs in the first inning and didn’t score again until the seventh. But thanks in part to a couple of errors, they added three more and went on to win 5-1.
Byrd improved to 17-10 overall and 11-0 in District 1-5A with only Haughton left to play. Haughton, which lost to Menard 9-3 in a non-district game Friday, is in second at 9-2. Parkway is in third at 8-3. The Lady Panthers are 15-11 overall.
At Parkway, both teams got solid pitching performances. Parkway’s Samantha Guile scattered six hits (per Parkway scoring) and Byrd’s Callie Crandall allowed seven (per Byrd scoring).
Parkway’s didn’t have a baserunner until Rebecca Lynch singled in the bottom of the fourth.
After Byrd took the 5-0 lead in the top of the seventh, the Lady Panthers rallied.
Alexis Rayborn, Kaytlyn Guerrero and Lindsey Hutcheson all singled to load the bases with one out. Rayborn scored on Hannah Kennady’s ground out to third. But Crandall got a fly out to end the game.
Claire Hyde had two hits and three RBI for Byrd. Chandler Higgins also had two hits.
At Haughton, Anna Dies went 2-for-3 with a double for the Lady Bucs (15-8). Savannah O’Neal also had two hits.
The Lady Bucs defeated Captain Shreve 15-0 in four innings on Thursday.
Dies went 4-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI. Lacey Dodson had three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Savannah Salley ahd Leah Hopson had two hits and two RBI each. Salley, Savannah O’Neal and Natalie Smith all had doubles.
Ashley Smith pitched a three-hitter.
