Two parish wrestlers nab top seeds in state tournament

Bossier’s Jalen Oliver and Benton’s Andre’ Dean are No. 1 seeds in their respective weight classes in the LHSAA State Wrestling Tournament.

The event starts today and concludes Saturday at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner.

Oliver is the top seed in the Division II 182-pound weight class, which he won last year. Dean is the top seed in the 152-pound class.

Dean was the state runner-up in the Division II 145-pound class last year, losing a 3-2 decision to Parkway’s Cody Thomas.

Oliver and Dean have already won regional and parish titles.

Parkway finished sixth in Division II last season and was ranked third in the latest rankings on louisianwrestling.net behind Teurlings Catholic and Live Oak.

The Panthers have four No. 2 seeds — Alex Simmaly (113 pounds), Jason Pitts (120), Hunter Huckaby (138) and Zac Funderburk (145). Four other Panthers are seeded — Garrett Strozier (4th, 106), Ryan Huckaby (3rd), 126), Nathan Pitts (4th, 132) and Austin Smith (7th, 152).

The sixth-ranked Tigers have six other seeds —Taylor Dubois (5th, 126), Josh Caskey (7th, 132), Jeffrey Lewis (3rd, 138), Tre’ Pugh (3rd, 145), Laytin “Obie” Spears (6th, 170) and Chauncey Taylor (4th, 185).

Bossier’s Avery Jones is seeded second at 152 pounds.

The Bearkats, ranked eight in Division II, have four other seeds — Kelvin Brooks (7th, 160), Christopher Hall (5th, 170), Donnie Edwards (5th, 195) and Kenderick Warren (8th, 285).

Regional and parish champion Airline, which was tied for 10th in the latest Division I rankings, has five seeded wrestlers — JuJu Jones (7th, 113), Christian Walden (4th, 126), Tony Lococo (4th, 132), Harrison Hooper (7th, 170) and Keegan Gilligan (6th, 182).

Two Haughton wrestlers grabbed seeds. Zack Denton is fifth in the 106-pound class and Jordan McCleskey is 7th at 182.
