A dozen Bossier Parish wrestlers advanced to the semifinals on the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State Tournament Friday at the CenturyLink Center.
Saturday’s first session, which features the semifinals, gets underway at 8 a.m. The championship round session begins at 6:30 p.m.
Four Airline wrestlers advanced in Division I — No. 1 seed Javarious “JuJu” Jones (126 pounds), No. 3 Joshua Partin (132), No. 4 Tony Lococo (145) and No. 1 Christian Walden (160).
Walden, who won both of his matches by fall, took the 152-pound class title last year. He faces No. 4 Brad Guidry of Brother Martin in the semifinals. Jones, who also had little trouble winning his first two matches, meets No. 5 Beau Bush of Holy Cross.
Partin and Lococo will be looking for upsets.
Partin, who edged Landon Wheat of East Ascension 8-7 in the quarterfinals, faces No. 2 Seth Gambill of Brother Martin. Lococo, who pinned both his opponents Friday, meets top-seeded Jake Rando of Holy Cross.
Four Parkway and three Haughton wrestlers advanced in Division II.
Parkway’s semifinalists are No. 4 Garrett Strozier (113), No. 4 Trevor Tamburo (120), No. 5 Dalton Driggers (138) and No. 1 Nathan Pitts (152).
Pitts, who was the 145-pound champ last year, faces No. 4 Trevor Gunter of Carencro. Pitts needed a total of 2:46 to pin his two opponents Friday.
Strozier, who pinned Alex Slaydon of Carencro in the quarterfinals, wrestles top-seeded Cooper Simon of Rayne. Tamburo, who won a 6-2 decision over Brett Scheneider of Teurlings Catholic in the quarterfinals, meets No. 1 Blake Mateu of Rummel.
Driggers upset No. 4 seed Eddie Williams of Caddo Magnet by fall in 3 minutes, 21 seconds in the quarterfinals. He faces top-seeded Brock Bonin of Teurlings Catholic.
Haughton’s semifinalists are No. 3 Dylan Holliday (120), No. 3 Daniel Monroe (195) and No. 2 Johnny Vanveckhoven (220).
Holliday, who pinned two opponents in a combined 3:30, wrestles No. 2 Morgan Manuel of Rayne. Monroe, who defeated No. 6 Justin Adams of Archbishop Shaw in the quarterfinals, takes on Austin Gary of Carencro.
Benton’s Chandler Beach (220), the No. 7 seed, reached the Division II 220 semifinals. Bossier Parish is guaranteed at least one finalist because Beach faces Vanveckhoven Saturday morning.
Beach upset No. 3 seed Anthony Ingram of Live Oak in the quarterfinals, pinning him in 2:36. Vanveckhoven pinned his first opponent in 49 seconds and his second in 1:42.
Airline is tied for seventh with St. Amant in Division I with 95 points. Seventeen-time champion Brother Martin leads with 171.5. Jesuit is second with 148.
