Middle school football (updated): Elm Grove, Benton post preseason victories

Elm Grove and Benton picked up middle school preseason football victories Tuesday.

Elm Grove swept Greenacres at Preston Crownover Stadium, winning the eighth-grade game 14-0 and the seventh-grade game 28-6. Host Benton swept Haughton, taking the eighth-grade game 6-0 and seventh-grade game 16-0.

Gabe Larry completed nine of 16 passes for 221 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown to Hayden Knotts, in Elm Grove’s eighth-grade victory. Brady Norcross scored the Eagles’ first touchdown on a 3-yard run. Luis Espino kicked both extra points.

Knotts and Norcross both had about 100 yards rushing, according to Elm Grove coach Clint Barnes.

Barnes said the Eagles’ PAT combination of Norcross (holder), Palmer Hearne (snapper) and Espino did a great job. Tyler Towns and Noah Wolf were both defensive standouts, Barnes said.

Elm Grove won the seventh-grade district title last season.

Adrian Allen rushed for about 115 yards, including a 10-yard TD run, in the Eagles’ seventh-grade victory. The other Elm Grove touchdowns were scored by James Jordan (10-yard run), Malachi White (3-yard run) and Cameron Marshall (55-yard run).

Barnes praised White for his hard running. He also said the offensive line blocked well, especially the right side of Devon Hall, Cameron Hall and Steven Gilbreath. White and Fabian Elias were defensive standouts, Barnes said.

At Benton, Clint Lasiter completed eight of 14 passes for 116 yards and scored on a 1-yard run in the Tigers’ eighth-grade win.

Running Back Ashur Hall had six catches for 91 yards. Jacob Thomas rushed eight times for 70 yards. Owen Wainscott had a 35-yard reception.

The defense was led by tackle Cade Waites, end Brock Vanhoy, and linebackers Riley Sharp, Clint Lasiter, and Azaion Taylor.

Caleb Cassidy completed four of seven passes for 65 yards for the Benton freshman team. Evan Cole had 30 yards rushing and one 20-yard catch. He scored on a 7-yard run and added the conversion run.

Aiden Howard, who scored on a 10-yad run, gained 47 yards on the ground. Ethan Stewart caught two passes for 40 yards. Quarterback Ayden Colving scored a conversion.

The defense was led by linebackers Dylan Littleton and Aaron Echols and end Jaylon Taylor.

The eighth-grade jamboree is Tuesday at Preston Crownover Stadium. There will also be a seventh-grade jamboree this year. It will be held Thursday, Sept. 8, at Bossier’s Memorial Stadium.

The first district games aren’t until Sept. 20.
