High school boys basketball: Benton notches second win; Parkway, Haughton fall

The Benton Tigers picked up their second win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Woodlawn 49-43 at Woodlawn.

Benton improved to 2-1 under first-year Head Coach Jake Bankston. Woodlawn dropped to 2-5.

Jordan Johnson and Greg Chambers led the Tigers with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Chambers also had six rebounds and Johnson had five.

Elsewhere, Parkway fell to Carroll 79-70 at Parkway and Haughton lost  to Sterlington 60-58 at Haughton.

At Parkway, the Panthers couldn’t overcome a 3-point barrage by the Bulldogs (1-3), who sank 13 from behind the arc.

Caleb Evans led Parkway (2-3) with 18 points. Antonio Gladney added 15, Jake Gaskins 13 and Tristan Sedberry 12. Kaleb Williams scored nine.

Carroll hit eight of their 3s in the first quarter and led 28-15. Jaden Williams, who scored 21 points, made four. Treylan Neal, who led the Bulldogs with 25 points, sank two in the quarter. Neal and Williams finished with five 3s each.

Carroll cooled off a bit in the second quarter but still led 45-27 at the half. The Bulldogs were up 62-46 after three quarters.

Sedberry knocked down two 3s in the fourth as Parkway tried to rally. But the Panthers couldn’t overcome the deficit.

At Haughton, the Bucs (1-5) led 33-27 at the half. Sterlington (4-1) rallied in the third and led 45-44. 

Haughton got the ball down 59-56 with 17.2 seconds left. But the Panthers used fouls to prevent the Bucs from getting off a 3.

Haughton made two free throws with 3.7 seconds left. It appeared the Bucs tried to miss the second one but it banked in. 

Sterlington made one free throw and Haughton missed a desperation shot near halfcourt.
