It has been a busy competition season for the Haughton High School Marksmanship team and it’s not
over yet!

The Bucs in Blue earned three 1 st place wins in Louisiana and a 2 nd place finish in a Texas competition. But that was only the start of their success. In late January, the Bucs competed against 37 teams in the Air
Rifle State Championship where they earned 1 st place in the Air Force Division and State Champion
Runner-Up Overall. On an individual level, Layla Briggs earned 1 st place and earned the title as State
Champion out of 120 competitors! Big cheers also for Chris Fick, who earned 4 th place; Erin Rigsby, 5 th;
Emily Wood, 15 th; and Ethan Evans, 16 th .

But wait, there’s more! The Haughton team earned 1 st place in the Air Force Nationals qualifier, besting
over a hundred teams, which earned them a spot in the Air Force JROTC National Championship where
the Bucs placed 5 th in the nation! Then, in an exciting finals match, Team Commander Layla Briggs
earned National Champion Runner-Up and Chris Fick finished 25 th .

The Bucs in Blue are also the American Legion Louisiana State Champions and Layla Briggs is the overall
state champion! She will be moving on to the Legion National Qualifier next month.

So, what’s next for the team? Their Air Force Nationals accomplishments have qualified them for the All-
Service JROTC Championships in March in Camp Perry, Ohio.

Congratulations to the Haughton High School Marksmanship team on a stellar season!
