High school girls basketball: Haughton, Airline win 1-5A openers

The Haughton Lady Bucs and Airline Lady Vikings opened District 1-5A play with victories Friday night.

Haughton extended its win streak to 17 with a 49-41 victory over Natchitoches Central at Haughton. Airline routed Byrd 56-18 at Byrd for its fourth straight victory.

In the other 1-5A openers, Benton fell to Huntington 60-46 at Huntington, and Captain Shreve defeated Evangel Christian 56-9 at Evangel.

In non-district games, Bossier defeated Haynesville 59-42 at Haynesville, and Plain Dealing lost to Northwood at Plain Dealing.

At Haughton, Skylar Branch led the Lady Bucs (19-5) with 19 points. Bella Hammond added 14. Aliyah Delaney chipped in nine.

Haughton got off to a fast start. Branch scored eight, Hammond five and Delaney four as the Lady Bucs rolled to an 18-6 first-quarter lead.

Haughton cooled off in the second quarter. But the Lady Bucs limited the Lady Chiefs to three points and led 26-9 at the half.

Branch scored seven and Hammond hit a 3-pointer in the third. Haughton extended its lead to 43-21.

Jordan McDaniel led Natchitoches Central (14-5) with 18 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

Haughton visits Arcadia in a non-district game Tuesday.

At Byrd, Nia Williams and Addison McDowell led Airline (8-9) with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Ke’Zyriah Sykes and Cartavya Butler scored seven each.

Airline hosts Evangel Christian Tuesday.

At Plain Dealing, Jakayla Douglas led the Lady Lions (9-11) with 12 points. Northwood improved to 12-7.

At Huntington, Benton fell to 15-11. Huntington improved to 12-5.

At Haynesville, Bossier improved to 7-8. Haynesville dropped to 3-12.
