High school baseball: Benton, Airline complete sweeps of 1-5A opponents; PCA wins

The Benton Tigers and Airline Vikings completed two-game sweeps of District 1-5A opponents Tuesday.

Benton defeated Haughton 10-3 at Benton, and Airline defeated Byrd 5-2 at Airline.

In the other 1-5A games, Parkway fell to Evangel Christian 9-5 at Parkway and Captain Shreve defeated Natchitoches Central 12-2.

In a District 1-B game, Providence Classical Academy defeated Doyline 12-2 at Doyline.

Benton (19-2-2, 8-0) continues to lead 1-5A. Airline (12-10, 7-2) is second. They are followed by Evangel (13-7, 5-3), Captain Shreve (15-9, 5-4), Natchitoches Central (16-8, 5-4), Haughton (12-11, 3-5), Byrd (6-16, 2-7) and Parkway (7-14, 1-7).

At Benton, the Tigers led 5-0 after four innings. Haughton scored two in the top of the fifth but Benton answered with five in the bottom of the inning.

Benton had nine hits. Harrison Miller went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Hayden Millen went 2-for-4. 

Case Jorden had a double and two RBI. Josh Hutchison had three RBI. 

Slade Stephens went 6 2/3 innings for the win.

Haughton had nine hits. The Bucs had opportunities but left nine on base. Russ Barrett went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. CT Woodard went 2-for-3 with a home run. Maddox Williams went 2-for-4 with a double.

Benton hosts Evangel in the first of a two-game series Thursday at Benton at 6. Haughton visits Captain Shreve in the first game of their series Thursday at 6.

At Airline, the Vikings led 3-0 through four innings. Byrd scored two in the fifth to get within one. The Vikings added two in the sixth,

Airline starter Jack Henry Smith allowed two hits, struck out three and walked one in five innings. 

Ayden Hawn went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Bo Carter had a triple. Zach Kolniak had a double.

Airline hosts Quitman Thursday at 6.

At Parkway, the Panthers led 4-2 through four innings, but Evangel scored three in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Parkway had nine hits. Dallas Loche and Jax Thompson both went 2-for-3. Peyton Rayner and Colby Donaldson both went 2-for-4 with one double each. 

Parkway hosts Huntington Thursday at 6.

At Doyline, David Mobley went 4-for-6 with a double and three RBI. Starting pitcher Benton Axton went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Tanner Stinson went 2-for-3 with a double. He also drew three walks. Brennan Gutman went 2-for-3. B  Willis had two RBI. J Barnish drew three walks.

Axton allowed one hits, struck out five and walked four in five innings. 

PCA (7-10, 1-1) visits Minden Friday at 6.
