Friends, family members and supporters across Northwest Louisiana have come together to assist the family of Col. Greg Watson following the tragic June 15 B-52 crash at Edwards Air Force Base in California that claimed the lives of eight service members.
A GoFundMe campaign established for Watson’s family has raised nearly $65,000 through more than 400 donations, reflecting an overwhelming outpouring of support from the community and beyond.
Watson, a respected military leader and member of the Barksdale Air Force Base community, was among those killed in the crash. At the time of the accident, he was serving in a contractor role rather than in reserve status, leaving questions about benefits that may be available to his family.
The fundraiser was created to provide immediate financial assistance to Watson’s wife, Michele, and their family as they navigate life following the loss of their husband and father.
According to organizers, the funds will help cover household expenses, bills and other financial obligations as the family adjusts to the loss of one of its primary sources of income. Donations will also help support educational and travel expenses for the family’s children.
Watson is survived by his wife, five children and a stepdaughter. Two of his children are currently attending college, while another is serving on a church mission.
Organizers said the response from the community has been both humbling and encouraging during an incredibly difficult time for the family.
“The family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and support,” organizers said in a statement accompanying the fundraiser.
The tragedy has touched many throughout the Barksdale and Bossier communities, where Watson was known for his service, leadership and dedication to both his family and country.
As the community continues to mourn the loss of the eight service members killed in the crash, supporters say the fundraiser offers a meaningful way to assist the Watson family and help ease some of the financial burdens they now face.
The campaign remains active as friends, neighbors and supporters continue to contribute and share messages of encouragement with the family.
