The Bossier Bearkats withstood a strong challenge from the Glenbrook Apaches in a 34-7 victory Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
Bossier (2-0) held off Glenbrook inside the 5 twice in the first quarter and led 8-0 at the half. The Bearkats pulled off another goalline stand in the third quarter then pulled away with three touchdowns in the fourth.
Bossier quarterback Montrevell Lewis made some big plays but he began suffering leg cramps late in the second quarter on a night where the temperature hovered in the mid-80s and the humidity was about 60 percent. He left the game for good with about nine minutes to play.
Lewis still ran for 78 yards on 12 carries and passed for 84 yards.
Lewis’ backup Shante Wells was very effective, completing 7-of-8 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Jamez Cobb had a huge night with six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns
Javeon Mitchell had four catches for 53 yards. He also made a great play on an interception in the end zone after Glenbrook scored its only touchdown and recovered an onside kick at the Bearkats 29. Jaylen James had one catch for 28 yards.
Demareya Bates rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown. Braylyn Williams ran for 40 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown.
After holding Glenbrook inside the 10 on the Apaches’ first drive, Bossier drove 91 yards for its only touchdown of the first half, a 4-yard run by Lewis. Lewis scored the two-point conversion.
The Bearkats had a chance to score before the half. But a penalty after a Lewis run to the 9 pushed them back to the 25. Glenbrook’s Ace Rolen then intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Bossier took the second-half kickoff and drove for a touchdown.
Lewis suffered a cramp during a long run into Glenbrook territory. Wells completed a 25-yard pass to Cobb. Bates ran 10 yards to the 9 and scored on third-and-goal from the 7.
Another two-point conversion run by Lewis made it 16-0. A fumble recover at the Apaches 31 set up the Bearkats’ third touchdown with 8:28 left in the game. Bossier’s final two touchdowns came on big plays.
Bossier visits Logansport next Friday. The Tigers (1-0) play Buckeye Friday night.
