BENTON – Abi Coleman Cummings, 93, of Benton, La., died at 4:15 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2014.

Abi was born in Homer, La. on November 14, 1920 to John and Jessie Mae Coleman. She graduated from Homer High School and later Louisiana Polytech University receiving a B.S. degree in Commerce. She was the wife of Dayton Emmett Cummings, Jr., a former Agriculture County Agent of Bossier Parish, from 1946 until his death in 1980.

Abi was employed at Barksdale AFB during World War II as a supervisor in a procurement services role. She served in education for a number of years as a teacher at Summerfield, La. and Benton, La., served on the staff of the Bossier Parish Police Jury, and was an active member of the Benton Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her three children; George Cummings of Shreveport, La., Tom Cummings of Sulphur, La., and Jane Updyke of Benton, La., three grandchildren; Christopher Cummings, John Cummings, and Laura Cummings, one great-granddaughter, Maci Ann Cummings, and one nephew, Ronald Coleman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jessie Mae Coleman, her husband, Dayton Emmett Cummings, Jr., and her two brothers; Theron Coleman and Reginald Coleman.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Hill Crest Funeral Home, followed by the funeral and burial services at 1 p.m. at Hill Crest.
