The Airline Vikings fell to the No. 4 seed Denham Springs Yellow Jackets 3-0 in the first round of the Class 5A baseball playoffs Tuesday in Denham Springs.
No. 29 seed Airline closed the season 18-17. The Vikings shared the District 1-5A championship with Byrd.
Airline’s loss leaves Benton as the only Bossier Parish team still playing baseball. The Tigers (26-8) received the No. 4 seed in the Class 4A playoffs and will host No. 29 South Terrebonne (15-15) in the first round Thursday at 4 p.m.
Denham Springs scored all of its runs in the second inning. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases on a single and back-to-back hit batters. The first run scored on a fielder’s choice and the next two on a single.
Denham Springs only got one other hit off Airline’s Kyle Backofen the rest of the game.
The Vikings had a few opportunities. In the seventh, Zack Beene and Hayden Waxley had back-to-back singles with one out. But a strikeout and flyout ended the game.
Cameron Taylor and Jarrett Bamburg led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. But the Vikings followed that with two strikeouts and a flyout.
The Vikings also had two on with two out in the fourth but couldn’t get the big hit.
Backofen allowed three hits and walked one. Bamburg went 2-for-2 and walked once.
Denham Springs, the District 4-5A champion, improved to 26-9.
