Airline players shine in all-star games

Recent Airline graduates Kyle Backofen and Jamie Roberts stood out in state All-Star baseball and softball games last week.

Backofen was named the West MVP in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association Baseball All-Star Games.

Backofen, bound for Louisiana-Monroe, started Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader at ULL’s Tigue Stadium.

He went two innings, allowing no hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

Game 1 ended tied 1-1 after the West scored in the bottom of the seventh. The East won Game 2 5-0.
Airline infielder Peyton Davis, Haughton pitcher Triston Carmack, Benton pitcher Tanner Craft and Benton outfielder Wade Grubbs were on the West roster.

Roberts helped the West win Game 1 of the LHSCA All-Star Softball Games on Friday.
She had a two-RBI double in the top of the fourth inning and the West went on to defeat the East 4-1 at Louisiana College in Pineville.

“I already knew what the pitcher was like because I watched her play at the state tournament,” Roberts told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “So I fouled off two balls and I just did what my dad always told me, ‘Swing hard and you might hit it.’

“She threw me the inside pitch, and I went with it.”
