The Airline Vikings took a season’s worth of frustration on the Southwood Cowboys Friday night at Northwood’s Jerry Burton Memorial Stadium.
The Vikings ended a four-game losing streak with a 42-6 victory. Airline improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in District 1-5A. Southwood dropped to 2-5 and 0-3.
Depending on your point of view, Airline has been snakebit this season or simply prone to making mistakes. Those mistakes are a big reason why the Vikings are 3-5 and not 6-2 or even better.
Friday, Airline didn’t have a single turnover and forced four. The Vikings made quick work of the Cowboys, rolling to a 35-0 halftime lead.
Airline did most of its damage on the ground, rolling up 366 yards. Shuncee Thomas gained 118 yards on just nine carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 40, 5 and 28 yards.
Darian Germany scored on a 6-yard run and Noah Hildebrand hit Cameron Howell for a 19-yard score in the first half.
Brian Fielding (22 yards) and Frank Winn (1 yard) added rushing touchdowns in the second half.
Airline spread the wealth as far as running the ball was concerned with five backs in addition to Thomas gaining at least 30 yards — Fielding (3-46), Winn (6-44), D’Kameron White (6-43), Germany (7-36) and Thomas McKain (2-34).
Hildebrand completed six of seven passes for 102 yards. Howell caught two for 57.
The Airline defense, which has been outstanding all season, limited the Cowboys to just 156 total yards. John Davis, Tyrise Neal and Alex English had interceptions. English stopped a Southwood drive with his interception in the end zone and returned it 85 yards.
Nathan Naranjo was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra-point kicks.
Airline plays Captain Shreve next Friday at Lee Hedges Stadium. The Gators (3-5, 1-2) lost to Haughton 38-17 Friday night.
