At the Library: It’s National Library Card Sign Up Month!

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month! This year marks the 37th annual celebration, which kicked off in 1987.

Andrea Gilmer, MLIS Community Engagement Librarian Bossier Parish Libraries

The American Library Association came up with this campaign upon hearing William Bennett’s, then Secretary of Education, suggested that a campaign be held with the goal that “every child should obtain a library card and use it.” Together with the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS), and with a grant of $85,000 from the Reader’s Digest Foundation, they begin their campaign. And with all the pieces in place they sent a telegram to Bennett with the line, “We accept your challenge.” It’s 2024 and ALA, and libraries across the country, are still accepting that challenge.

Here in Bossier Parish, we have a few initiatives in place to help get a library card for every child in our area. First, in partnership with the Bossier Parish School Board, we have Student eCards which are automatically issued to every public-school student in the parish; these cards allow access to our research databases to help students with school projects and to give them access to free certified tutors to help with homework. Another way we strive for this goal is by offering library card registration at the community events we are invited to. If you want to meet us out in the community, be sure to drop by Zombie Walk at the East Bank Plaza on Saturday, October 12!

The classic way you, and your children, can get library cards is by stopping by any of our seven locations.  If you register for a library card any time this September, you can take a picture with a large version of our library cards. If you do get a library card and take a picture, be sure to share it on social media and tag us so we can like your post!
