The men and women of Barksdale Air Force Base have been selected as one of Volunteer Louisiana’s 2013 Champions of Service.

The BAFB volunteers were recognized,Thursday night at the Champions of Service Gala held at the Capital Park Museum in Baton Rouge.

Volunteer Louisiana was established in 1993 by the Louisiana Lieutenant Governor’s Office to promote the volunteers of Louisiana and emphasize the ethics of service within the state. The BAFB volunteers have donated time to assist the community in various projects and will be recognized, along with Warrick Dunn, former Louisiana native, NFL running back, and founder of Warrick Dunn Charities.

“The Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau considers it an honor to have Barksdale Air Force Base in our community,” said Stacy Brown, president of the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau. “Encouraged to volunteer throughout their military careers, volunteer service becomes a part of who they are for many airmen and retirees.”

Within the past two years, more than 300 BAFB volunteers gave 2,800 hours of their time, helping with 61 events. The volunteers assisted with providing information, serving as assistants, distributing meals, shuttling other volunteers and individuals to assigned areas, maintaining structure and peace, and over all, uplifting the community. The events represent local, state, and national events, such as the 2012 Bassmaster Classic, Mardi Gras parades, LA Film Prize, and more. These could not have been properly executed without the help of the BAFB volunteers.

The Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau saw the value of having an organized volunteer program as an added service they could provide to their clients, partners, and the community. Tourist Bureau clients and partners now have the opportunity to request volunteers for conventions and community events. This service can be especially helpful to organizations from outside of the Shreveport-Bossier area that might need extra helping hands.
