Aaron Sheppard pitched a five-hitter as the Benton Tigers defeated the defending Class 3A state champion Evangel Eagles 2-1 Tuesday night at Centenary’s Shehee Stadium.
The victory avenged a 5-3 loss to the Eagles in Parkway’s Nathan George Invitational last Friday at Benton.
The Tigers (2-3) scored single runs in the first and second innings. Evangel scored its lone run in the seventh.
Sheppard struck out five and walked none. Cameron Horton had a double. Wade Grubbs and Branson Woodward had one RBI each.
Evangel got three of its hits — all singles — in the seventh. But Sheppard got a ground out with a runner at second to end the game.
