Baseball: Benton’s streak ends; Airline gets past Minden

The Benton Tigers saw their eight-game win streak end Tuesday with a 6-3 District 1-4A loss to the North DeSoto Griffins at Benton.

The Tigers suffered their first district loss. Benton (18-8, 5-1) trails North DeSoto (14-6, 6-1) by half-game in the standings.

Elsewhere, the Airline Vikings rebounded from Monday’s loss to Benton with a 6-4 non-district victory over Airline at Airline.

At Benton, the Tigers got off to a great start, scoring two in the first. Wade Grubbs led off with a single and scored on Cameron Horton’s single.

Tanner Craft reached on a walk, advanced to second on Horton’s hit and third on Aaron Sheppard’s sacrifice. He scored on a double-play ball to second base.

North DeSoto rallied with three runs in the fifth on four singles, a walk and a hit batter. The Griffins added three more in the sixth with two of those coming on Hunter Speights’ two-out homer over the right field fence.

The Tigers got one back on Jaret Gill’s single in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3. But North Desoto’s Matthew Ramsey set the Tigers down in order in the sixth and seventh.

Ramsey scattered seven hits and struck out 11. Grubbs went 2-for-3, and Branson Woodward had a double.

Benton continues 1-4A Saturday with a noon home game against Minden.

At Airline, Cameron Taylor went 2-for-2 with a double as the Vikings improved to 16-8. Peyton Davis went 2-for-3. Peyton Coker and Josh James had two RBI each.

The Vikings broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hayden Waxley singled and advanced to second on a ground out. He scored on Taylor’s double. Taylor advanced to third on a Davis single and came home on the throw.

Airline, the District 1-5A leader at 6-0, begins a three-game district series at 6 p.m. Thursday against Southwood at Airline.
