Haughton will be on the road in the first round on the Class 5A baseball state playoffs, but the Bucs won’t have to travel far.
Haughton (17-12), the No. 22 seed, will play the No. 11 Byrd Yellow Jackets (19-10) at Byrd’s field at LSUS.
The Bucs and the Yellow Jackets split their regular-season 1-5A series. Byrd won 13-8 April 9 at LSUS, and Haughton won 5-4 at home April 12.
It’s the second year in a row that a Bossier Parish team has had to play Byrd in the first round. Last year, Byrd upset Airline 8-6. Byrd was the No. 22 seed and Airline No. 11 last year.
This year District 1-5A champion Airline is the No. 3 seed. The Vikings (26-4) host No. 30 Central Lafourche (16-11) in the first round.
In Class 4A, District 1 champion Benton (17-11), the No. 6 seed, hosts No. 27 Franklin Parish (14-13).
Airline will be looking to get past the first round for the first time since the Vikings defeated Haughton in 2012. Airline lost to Zachary in 2014 and Denham Springs in 2013.
Central Lafourche finished third in District 7 with an 8-4 record.
Haughton has made the playoffs four out of five years since moving up to Class 5A in 2012.
The Bucs lost to Live Oak in the first round in 2015. Haughton upset No. 8 St. Paul in the first round in 2013 and lost to West Monroe in the second. In 2012, the Bucs lost to Acadiana in the first round.
Benton has reached the Class 4A quarterfinals the last three years. Franklin Parish finished fourth in a tough District 2 at 2-8.
The Haughton-Byrd game isn’t the only first-round game featuring district opponents. In Class 4A, No. 20 Minden visits No. 12 North DeSoto.
