The Haughton Lady Bucs and Bossier Lady Kats finsihed as the runners-up in their own tournaments Saturday.
Haughton lost a 34-33 heartbreaker to the Ruston Lady Bearcats in the championship game of the Jack Clayton Haughton Invitational at Haughton.
West Monroe proved to be too much for Bossier in the title game of the Bossier Federal Credit Union Lady Kats Invitational, winning 65-27 at Bossier.
The Parkway Panthers finished third in the Jack Clayton boys division with a 66-54 victory over Minden. It was the Panthers’ second victory over Minden in the tournament.
Artavious Lynn led Parkway with 20 points. Juwon Johnson and Trevon Rogers scored 13 each. Byrd won the championship with a 77-62 victory over Lakeside. Montrey Thomas led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points. Byrd defeated Parkway 64-61 in the semifinals Thursday.
The Plain Dealing Lady Lions finished third in the Lady Kats Invitational with a 50-45 overtime victory over BTW. Plain Dealing trailed by many as five with less than a minute left in regulation. BTW still led by four with 15 seconds left, but Plain Dealing scored then got a steal and a layup to send it into overtime.
Haughton led by as many as eight points in the second half against Ruston, but the Lady Bearcats chipped away at lead.The Lady Bucs still led by four with about 2:30 left in the game before Ruston scored five straight to take a 31-30 lead with 1:42 left.
The Lady Bearcats tied it with a free throw and then went ahead 33-31 with 53.8 seconds left. Haughton’s Cassandra Simmons, who scored 17 points, hit two free throws to tie it with 43.4 seconds left.
Haughton’s Inez Green rebounded a Ruston miss at the other end, giving the Lady Bucs a chance to take the lead. But they missed a shot on a drive to the basket and committed a foul with 4.9 seconds left.
The Lady Bearcats’ A. McWain made one of two free throws. Haughton’s Ebone’ Green put up a shot from about 20 feet at the buzzer that looked like it had a chance, but it bounced off the left side of the rim and backboard.
Elsehwere, Airline posted two victories Saturday in the St. Michael tournament in Baton rouge, defeated Denham Springs 49-47 and Vandebilt Catholic 42-32 to improve to 7-1.
The Airline boys defeated Redemptorist 61-46 in the St. Amant tournament. Airline went 1-2 in the tournament and is now 4-3 on the season.
The Bossier boys won twice Saturday in the University High tournament in Baton Rouge, defeating Career Academy 49-37 and Christian Life 42-23.
Larry Robinson and Chris Davenport led the Bearkats (3-4) with 14 points each. Robinson scored 13 and Donnell Mason 11 against Christian Life.
