The Benton Tigers scored 10 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-0, five-inning victory over District 1-4A rival Northwood in the second round of the Class 4A state baseball playoffs Tuesday night at Benton.
The No. 4 seed Tigers (28-8) will host No. 5 St. Michael the Archangel (23-9) in the quarterfinals next week.
St. Michael defeated No. 12 Eunice 8-6 in the second round Tuesday.
As well as Benton senior Jordan Shaffer was pitching, the Tigers may have needed just one run to win. Shaffer, a Northwestern State signee, pitched a no-hitter with six strikeouts.
Wade Grubbs went 2-for-3, including a two-run single that made it 7-0 in the first inning. Cameron Horton had a two-run triple to make it 9-0. Shaffer had a double to lead off the first.
The Tigers got also hits from Aaron Henigan and Taylor Ward in the first inning. Peyton Leflett had a sacrifice fly.
Benton also took advantage of some shaky Falcon pitching. Northwood, the No. 13 seed, used three in the inning. Northwood pitchers hit three batters and issued two walks. The Falcons also committed an error.
That Benton dominated was somewhat of a surprise. The teams split their district meetings with Benton winning 4-2 and Northwood 6-5.
