Benton, Airline fare well in McNeese cross country meet

Airline freshman Isabelle Shamblin finished fifth in the McNeese Cowboys Stampede cross country meet girls’ division Saturday in Lake Charles.

Shamblin covered the 5K course in 20 minutes, 1.93 seconds. Barbe’s Ciara Gilroy finished first in 19:01.34.

Benton senior Quinci Middlebrooks finished 11th in 21:15.95. Airline’s May Randle was 17th in 21:53.95. Benton’s Katie McKay finished 19th in 21:55.72.

Benton and Airline finished 3-4 in the girls’ team competition with 89 and 96 points, respectively. Ascension Catholic won with 77.

Benton, the defending Class 4A state champ, finished runner-up in the boys’ division with 88 points. Houston Stratford won with 19. Airline took fifth with 158.

Stephen Singleton led Benton with a ninth-place finish in 16:31.49. Airline’s Kaleb Sahlie was 13th in 17:02.35.

Benton’s Josh Caskey was 23rd in 17:33.51 and Logan Caskey 28th in 17:43.27.
