Benton archers target world tourney

Amanda Crane/Press Tribune |  Fourth grader Emma Bunch takes aim at archery practice Tuesday afternoon at Benton Elementary School.

The Benton Elementary archery team is taking aim and setting their sights on a world championship title.

The group of fourth and fifth grade students will be traveling to Madison, Wisconsin in July to compete amongst the best in the world after a Top 10 finish at the national tournament.

This is the first time a group from Bossier Parish has made it to the world tournament, which includes teams from England, Africa, Canada and Mexico. The Benton Elementary students competed at the 2014 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) national tournament last month in Louisville, Kentucky. The team placed eighth overall and was the top finishing school from the state of Louisiana.

To help cover travel expenses, the team is selling raffle tickets for three Academy Sports gift cards. First prize is for $700; second prize, $350; and third, $300.

A fish fry is also being held June 21 in the Airline High School parking lot. Fish plates are $10 or for a generous donation; they are $8 if tickets are bought ahead of time.

To buy tickets for the fish fry and/or raffle, team members will be in front of Brookshire’s in Benton from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, June 14.
