Benton falls in second round of soccer playoffs

The No. 12 seed Benton Tigers fell to No. 5 Vandebilt Catholic 5-1 in the second round of the Division II boys soccer playoffs Wednesday in Houma.

The game was scoreless through the first 23 minutes. But the Terriers scored three in the final 22 minutes of the half and then tacked on another early in the second before Benton finally got on the board.

Vandebilt Catholic defeated Benton 3-1 in the second round last season.

Benton, the District 1 champion, finished 15-6-2. Vandebilt Catholic is one of the state’s traditional soccer powers. The Terriers were the state runner-up last season and have won multiple state championships.
