Washington, D.C. – The vibrant Washington Mardi Gras festivities culminated on Saturday with a spectacular formal ball, presided over by King Rico Alvendia and Queen Kendall Williams, marking the end of their reign. The event, held at the Washington Hilton, included a dazzling parade of court princesses, Louisiana festival queens, and a surprise performance by the Howard University Marching Band in honor of Queen Kendall Williams, a Howard student.

King Rico Alvendia, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and Bronze Star recipient, dedicated his reign to honoring America’s military, veterans, and first responders. Through the theme, “Duty, Honor, Louisiana,” Alvendia spotlighted Louisiana’s rich culture while fostering unity and gratitude for the sacrifices made by service members and their families.

Throughout the week, King Alvendia spearheaded events that underscored his mission, including:

  • Visiting wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
  • Laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
  • Hosting a USO-style concert headlined by country star Jake Owen.
  • Welcoming performances by the West Point Band and orchestrating a grog ceremony and memorial for fallen service members.

Alvendia’s dedication to supporting veterans continues through his Mars Hero Fund nonprofit and the Legion of Mars parade in New Orleans, which includes active-duty military and first responders among its members.

Bossier Chamber’s Role in Washington Mardi Gras

Amid the celebration of Louisiana’s culture and heroes, local leadership from Northwest Louisiana took center stage. Lisa Johnson, President of the Bossier Chamber of Commerce, and Vice President Jessica Hemingway represented the region in Washington, D.C., alongside the Bossier Parish Police Jury and Cyber Innovation Center.

The team participated in Congressional meetings, focusing on critical infrastructure and economic development initiatives that could shape the future of Bossier Parish and beyond. Their efforts reflect the region’s commitment to fostering growth and innovation, aligning with the broader mission of Washington Mardi Gras to showcase Louisiana’s achievements and potential.
