Midshipman Jackson Tinkis, a graduate of Airline High School and native of Bossier City, marked a significant milestone on June 23, 2025, as he graduated from the prestigious U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York.

Tinkis, who earned a degree in Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management, was nominated to the Academy by U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy. The Academy, one of the five U.S. federal service academies, prepares graduates for service as licensed Merchant Marine officers and commissioned officers in the armed forces.

A standout both academically and athletically, Tinkis served as a four-year starting kicker for the USMMA Mariners football team. He set multiple team records, including career, season, and single-game point-after-touchdown (PAT) totals, along with the most career kicking points in the program’s history.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Tinkis demonstrated leadership as the 2nd Company Human Resources Officer, managing responsibilities within the Academy’s structured regimental system.

As part of the Academy’s signature “Sea Year” training, which offers hands-on maritime experience aboard commercial vessels, Tinkis served as an engine cadet aboard the MV Horizon Spirit, MV Iowa, and MV CK Valor. His training voyages took him to ports around the world, including Honolulu, Long Beach, Savannah, Charleston, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.

Tinkis will now fulfill his service obligation by sailing on his Unlimited Third Assistant Engineer’s License in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He will also serve as a commissioned U.S. Navy Strategic Sealift Officer, contributing to the nation’s military readiness by supporting sealift capabilities during times of conflict or national emergency.

His graduation and commitment represent not only personal achievement, but also a proud moment for Bossier City and Louisiana, as one of their own steps into a vital role in national service and global commerce.
