Bossier City residents will vote later this year on whether to renew a tax for police and fire.

The Bossier City Council approved Tuesday a special election for citizens to vote on a property tax renewal of 6.19 mills.

The proposition will be on the May 9, 2020 municipal general election ballot.

“This is a renewal dedicated to police and fire and it generates about $4 million annually to pay salaries for police and fire. So, it’s nothing new, it’s a renewal,” Jimmy Hall, Bossier City attorney, said at Tuesday’s meeting.

If approved, the 6.19 mills would be renewed for 10 years from 2021 to 2030.

The millage is dedicated to the Bossier City Fire and Police Departments in operating and maintenance funding for public safety, including salary adjustments.

Voters renewed the same millage in 2010.
