This past week has been relatively eventful in Bossier City government. The ever-looming issue of term limits had its day in court. After both sides presented their arguments on the matter, Judge Parks returned his ruling that term limits should go to the voters. To proceed, the resolution needed approval from the City Council. However, when the resolution was presented, the council voted against sending it to the citizens, resulting in a 3-3 tie. At this point, it appears the matter will be delayed or possibly go to the next level on appeal.
On Wednesday, Bossier City and Keep Bossier Beautiful held their annual 9/11 Memorial at the Central Fire Station. Due to weather conditions, the ceremony was moved indoors. The event was well attended and consistently renews a sense of pride and patriotism within the community. While speaking at the event, Mayor Chandler said, “These attacks were intended to divide us and cause fear… but instead, they caused our nation to show our courage and become even more unified.” He added, “The tragedy was intended to break the spirit of our nation, but instead it proved that nothing can do that.” All first responders and local and state officials were recognized during the ceremony.
There was some confusion this week about taxes in Bossier City. The miscommunication arose because the parish rolled forward the millage with a small increase, leading some citizens to believe it was the city implementing the change.
On Tuesday, September 17th, Mayor Tommy Chandler’s Mayor’s Prayer Lunch will be held at the Fire and Police Training Academy at 5150 Shed Rd. This lunch aims to bring together community leaders to offer prayers of thanksgiving and seek God’s guidance as we honor Him. Mayor Chandler stated, “We cannot hope to have a successful city unless we are a people that prays and honors God.” The lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., and citizens are welcome to join in prayer. The speaker for this event will be Bossier Parish Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jason Rowland.
The South Bossier Lunch was a success on Wednesday, featuring Capt. Johnson of the Bossier Sheriff’s Department, who spoke about school safety and the importance of security for our children and school system.
Louisiana Downs, Super Derby, and Lucky Palace—what a winning combination! All were celebrated this past weekend at Louisiana Downs. Not only did we enjoy the Super Derby, but Mayor Chandler, Louisiana Downs owner Kevin Preston, and the owners of Lucky Palace were on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Lucky Palace is now officially open for business at Louisiana Downs. Known for providing premier dining, their new location makes it an even more special destination. Make plans to visit Lucky Palace soon.
L.S.U. faces South Carolina this week. This game should be a good indicator of what we can expect from Tiger football for the rest of the season.
