Since integrating Reach Out and Read into select pediatric clinics in 2022, Willis Knighton Health has put more
than 6,600 books into the hands of its young patients. Reach Out and Read is a national program that works
with pediatric healthcare providers to share and promote the lifelong benefits of families reading aloud to
their children. Reach Out and Read is the only national literacy program endorsed by the American Academy
of Pediatrics.

Funding for the books has been provided to the clinics through Willis-Knighton’s tithe the bottom line
community philanthropy.  Several Bossier Parish Schools collected more than 1,000 books to supplement the
program. Curtis Elementary, Meadowview Elementary, Princeton Elementary, Benton Intermediate, Cope
Middle, Airline High and Haughton High schools made book donations to WK Internal Medicine & Pediatric
Specialists and WK Preferred Pediatrics in Bossier City. Books were also distributed to participating clinics in
Shreveport: WK Center for Pediatrics South, WK Pediatric Health & Wellness and WK Tots to Teens Pediatric

Expanding language acquisition, increasing listening skills, and building long lasting familial bonds are just a
few of the benefits of Reach Out and Read. At the beginning of each well visit at participating Willis Knighton
clinics, each child is introduced to and given a developmentally appropriate book. During the visit, parents are
shown how to hold the book and engage their child, and how to interact with text and images to help the child
follow along.

“This program is an invaluable gift and blessing to our patients and families and gives us a tool to be a part of
increasing literacy in our community,” said Sheyenne Carper, MD, with WK Tots for Teens Pediatric Center.
