A Bossier school bus driver was arrested Thursday for operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a random drug screen.
Donna Atkinson, 50, of the 1100 block of Linton Road, was charged with DWI 1st with Child Endangerment and booked around noon Thursday.
Early Thursday morning, Atkinson drove her school bus route, safely delivering the students to their school destinations. At the conclusion of her route, she reported to a random drug screening and drove her school bus to that testing site. During the testing, Atkinson showed signs of impairment, and transportation officials with Bossier Parish Schools were immediately notified. Bossier Parish Schools Security was also notified, and Bossier Sheriff’s Office deputies quickly began their investigation. Atkinson performed poorly on the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Thursday morning and was arrested.
Atkinson admitted to deputies that she had consumed several alcoholic beverages Wednesday evening. She was booked into the Bossier Maximum Security Facility with a $1,000 bond.
“This is a very unfortunate incident and not indicative of our school bus drivers,” said Sheriff Whittington. “We will not tolerate impaired driving of any type, especially when we are dealing with the safety of our children. The random screening process worked like it should – the driver was tested, impairment was noted, and the driver was charged with DWI.”
