The Haughton Buccaneers and Airline Vikings posted wins as the high school basketball season got underway Tuesday night.
Haughton defeated Benton 69-62 at Haughton, and Airline downed Northwood 63-60 at Northwood.
Brandon Deane led Haughton with 16 points. Damien Sears added 11. Stephen Simmons and Starsky Willis scored 10 each.
Johntavious Johnson topped Benton with 16 points. Bubba Osby added 14, Jessie Little 13 and Cameron Harris nine.
The game was tied at 27 late in the second quarter when the Bucs started to play away. They outscored the Tigers 16-8 to take a 43-35 halftime lead.
Haughton extended the lead to 54-37 late in the third quarter. The Raiders hit a 3-pointer to get within 14 after three quartters.
Benton rallied within six with just over two minutes left. Willis hit four big free throws down the stretch to keep the Tigers at bay.
At Northwood, KJ Bilbo scored 14 points and Jacob Guest added 12 to lead the Vikings to the win. Zak Harper chipped in with 10.
Benton hosts Airline Thursday night. The game was moved from Friday because of Benton’s football playoff game.
