BPCC debater earns tournament victory, vaults to #2 nationally

Bossier Parish Community College Debate Team captain Jakob Volcheck is no stranger to national success.

He finished the 2014-2015 season as the #10 ranked novice debater in the nation, and his tournament victory at the University of Arkansas-Monticello recently has him reaching new heights as he now stands as the #2 ranked junior varsity debater in the nation.

On October 4, Volcheck notched his 8th victory of the U.A.M. tournament during the championship round of competition, a 2-1 victory over the tournament’s #6 seed – the University of Central Arkansas’ Mark Matlock.  Just a couple of hours earlier, Volcheck had defeated the tournament’s #1 seed, Union University’s Johnathan Hall, on a 3-0 decision (marking only the 2nd loss for Hall) in the semifinal round of competition. “I’m excited to see the work that Jakob has been putting in starting to pay off,” said Debate Team Coach Bob Alexander.  “This year he’s had the responsibility of team captain placed upon his shoulders and he’s truly emerging as a great example and an effective leader.  There’s a long season still ahead of us, but this definitely bodes well for Jakob’s potential on the year.”

Volcheck entered the UAM tournament ranked #18 and is now ranked as the #2 Junior Varsity debater in the nation, according to the International Public Debate Association’s season-long rankings.

The debate team travels to Union University, followed by competitions at LSU-Shreveport, East Texas Baptist University and Mississippi College to finish the fall semester.

The debate team is open to any student and no previous experience is required.  For more information about the team, contact Bob Alexander at 678-6460.
