BPCC men’s basketball coach Joe St. Andre thinks the 2013-14 Cavaliers have the potential to be one of the best at the school in a while.
The Cavs showed some of that potential Monday night with a 104-76 victory over East Texas Flight, a club team from Tyler, Texas, in the season opener at BPCC.
Gustavs Puhovs, a 6-foot-7 freshman from Riga, Latvia, hit five 3-pointers in the first half as BPCC rolled to a 53-29 lead.
Puhovs finished with six 3s and a team-high 20 points. Trayvion Johnson, a 5-10 sophomore out of Alexandria Peabody, hit four 3-pointers and had 19 points.
Six-foot-5 forward Wilbert Thomas, another Peabody product, scored 18. Sophomore D’Larious Venzant, a 6-5 Saline High product, added 10 points.
“We just shot the ball well,” St. Andre said. “If we shoot the ball like that, we can be very competitive. Big Gus shot it well, Tray shot it well, and Wil short it well”
Up next for the Cavs is the Southern Classic Friday and Saturday in Shreveport.
