The Bossier Parish Community College Theatre Program and the Cavalier Players will hold auditions for the staged psychological thriller Gaslight at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 8, in the Stephen W. Slaughter Theatre, Building C, on the BPCC campus, 6220 East Texas St. in Bossier City.
Community members and students ages 17 and older are encouraged to audition. Actors should bring a headshot and résumé if available, though neither is required. Audition participants are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete an audition form.
Directed by Lari Renee Leber, sponsor of the Cavalier Players, BPCC Theatre’s production of Gaslight is adapted by Stephen Dietz from Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 thriller Gas Light.
“A simple love story turned sour by the twist of a mind,” Leber said. “How much faith is too much in the hands of your love? This story explores our worst fear – love that isn’t real and how it can change the shape of our whole reality. You may leave wondering if your own mind has been turned.”
Set in Victorian England at the turn of the century, Gaslight follows newlyweds Bella and Jack as their seemingly perfect marriage begins to unravel. Strange events—including unexplained footsteps, a locked attic door and flickering gaslights—cause Bella to question both her reality and her husband’s intentions. The haunting psychological thriller is based on the acclaimed stage play and classic film that inspired the modern term “gaslighting.”
The production includes seven roles: three female, two male and two open to performers of any gender. Roles range in age from 18 to 60 and older. All roles are available, and community members are strongly encouraged to audition.
Those auditioning should be prepared to move about the stage, read from the script and participate in improvisational exercises. Individuals who have prepared a dramatic monologue may present it during auditions. Returning BPCC Theatre students are required to perform a 45-second monologue; however, prepared monologues are not required for other students or community members. Participants should dress comfortably.
Performance dates for Gaslight are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20-22 and 2 p.m. Aug. 23 in the Stephen W. Slaughter Theatre.
