Centenary College honored an extraordinary story of perseverance during its Commencement ceremony on Saturday, celebrating the graduation of 67-year-old John P. Smith, who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science nearly four decades after first enrolling.

Smith returned to Centenary in the summer of 2024, determined to complete the degree he had started in the 1980s. Adapting to the modern academic environment was no small feat, particularly as he navigated technology that didn’t exist when he first attended college.

“The thing that killed me was these stupid computers!” Smith joked, drawing laughter from classmates and faculty alike. Despite the challenges, he leaned on a winning attitude and sheer determination to see his goal through.

Smith credited much of his success to the supportive community at Centenary, particularly Dr. Amanda Donahoe, chair of the History and Political Science Department.

“He showed bravery at every challenge and expressed gratitude in every exchange,” said Dr. Donahoe. “I congratulate John on his momentous success in achieving his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.”

Smith’s journey back to the classroom came in the wake of personal loss. After his wife passed away in the winter of 2022, Smith said he found a new sense of purpose in completing what he had started decades earlier.

“One of the things about it is achievement,” Smith reflected. “I’m a very big competitor, especially in the game of tennis, and I don’t like things left over. I didn’t finish this thing. And I finally get to finish.”

Centenary’s 2025 Commencement not only celebrated the academic achievements of its graduates but also highlighted Smith’s inspiring story as a testament to perseverance, resilience, and lifelong learning.
